Autumn Gardening
There is no better time of the year for gardening in this district than Autumn.
I start first with a general tidy up. Anything that is untidy, wood or sparse – trim back, the only things that must not be pruned now are plants that are easily frosted. If your soil has become hard through out summer apply gypsum or 2 eloits liberally. 5 if the soil is water repellent and become used to using one of the penetration productions. If it is worth while. If you have not fertilised recently apply organic fertiliser to all garden beds, in preparation for sowing.
All winter veggies and herbs need to be sown now. The same applies to flower gardens. All our very soft pretty winter annuals need to go in now. This also includes bulbs bulbs.
Few flowers are more rewarding than bulbs when they commence to bloom, it can be as simple as a pat at the bottom of the stems, make your choice now as all the special bulbs sell quickly.
Vegies, flowers, bulbs respond very well from weekly feeds with a soluble fertiliser, it encourages growth. Seeds of the season would have to be the pea family, from beautiful sweat peas, snow peas, climbing peas.
Have a last check of your lawn for grubs or beetles, they still may require a final spray before winter, then encourage the lawn to be strong by fertilising before winter, using a nitrogen rich product. All Australian Natives can be sown now as most of them are not affected by frost.
Plant of the month would have to be Rosemary. For thousands of years Rosemary has been recognised as the herb of remembrance. – Happy Gardening.
