The True Meaning of Moree…

There has always been a difference of opinion as to the meaning of the word “Moree”

In the Royal Australian Historical Society’s journal (Aborigine Place names in northern NSW Vol. XVI, Part 11) two meanings are given – “spring” or “long waterhole”

However the rising sun emblem on Moree’s crest gives weight to the contention that the meaning was “rising sun”

The latter would appear to be the correct translation.

Mr Charles Boughton recalls, that his father and the late Mr John Cameron both spoke the Kamilaroi tongue and maintained this was correct.

This is further authenticated by Mr John Cameron, who, as Moree’s first Mayor, had the rising sun incorporated in the town’s crest.
